Working with Comments in WordPress

WordPress allows visitors to leave comments on blog posts, which helps build engagement and discussions. You can enable, disable, manage, and customize comments easily.


1. Enabling or Disabling Comments

Enable or Disable Comments for All Posts

  1. Go to Settings > Discussion in your WordPress dashboard.
  2. Under Default post settings, check or uncheck "Allow people to submit comments on new posts."
  3. Click Save Changes.

Enable or Disable Comments for Specific Posts or Pages

  1. Edit the post or page.
  2. In the right sidebar, find the Discussion section.
  3. Check or uncheck "Allow comments."
  4. Click Update.

Tip: Pages (like About or Contact) usually don’t need comments, while blog posts can have them.


2. Approving, Editing, and Deleting Comments

  1. Go to Comments in the WordPress dashboard.
  2. Hover over a comment to see options:
    • Approve – Makes the comment visible on your website.
    • Reply – Respond to the comment.
    • Edit – Modify the comment before approving.
    • Trash – Delete the comment.
    • Spam – Mark it as spam to block similar future comments.

Tip: You can set manual approval for comments under Settings > Discussion to avoid spam.


3. Preventing Spam Comments

🔹 Install an Anti-Spam Plugin:

  • Akismet Anti-Spam – Automatically filters spam.
  • Antispam Bee – Blocks bot-generated spam.

🔹 Require Comment Approval:

  • Go to Settings > Discussion.
  • Check "Comment must be manually approved."

🔹 Use Captcha for Comments:

  • Install reCAPTCHA plugin to prevent bot comments.
