How to Change Themes in WordPress
Changing a theme in WordPress allows you to modify your website’s design without affecting your content. Follow these steps to safely switch themes.
1. Backup Your Website (Recommended)
Before changing themes, create a backup to avoid losing any settings.
🔹 Use UpdraftPlus or Jetpack Backup to save your site.
2. Choose a New Theme
- Go to Dashboard → Click Appearance > Themes.
- Click “Add New” to browse themes.
- Search for a theme or use filters (Popular, Featured, Latest).
- Hover over a theme and click "Preview" to check its design.
- Click “Install”, then “Activate” to apply the theme.

✅ Premium Themes: Divi, Avada, Kadence, Flatsome
3. Customize the New Theme
- Go to Appearance > Customize.
- Modify colors, fonts, layouts, and menus.
- Check Widgets & Sidebars to reposition them if needed.
4. Check Website Functionality
- Visit your site to see if everything looks fine.
- Fix missing widgets under Appearance > Widgets.
- Reconfigure menus under Appearance > Menus.
5. Delete Unused Themes
- Go to Appearance > Themes.
- Click on an inactive theme and select Delete.
(Keep at least one default theme for backup, like Twenty Twenty-Four).
