Understanding Menus in WordPress

Menus in WordPress help users navigate your website by providing links to important pages, posts, categories, and custom links. You can customize menus to improve website navigation and user experience.

1. Accessing the WordPress Menu

To access and edit menus:

  1. Login to WordPress Dashboard (yourdomain.com/wp-admin).
  2. Go to Appearance > Menus.
  3. Click “Create a Menu” (if you haven't already).
  4. Assign a Menu Name (e.g., "Main Menu") and click Save Menu.

2. Adding Items to the Menu

You can add different types of content to your menu:

  • Pages – Add links to About, Contact, Services, etc.
  • Posts – Link to specific blog posts.
  • Categories – Group posts under specific topics.
  • Custom Links – Add external links (e.g., social media or another website).
  • Tags & Formats – Add post tags or custom formats for better organization.

To add items:

  1. Select items from the left panel.
  2. Click Add to Menu.
  3. Drag and drop items to reorder them.

3. Assigning Menu Locations

Most themes provide multiple menu locations:

  • Primary Menu – Main navigation bar (usually at the top).
  • Footer Menu – Links displayed at the bottom of the page.
  • Sidebar Menu – A vertical menu in the sidebar.
  • Mobile Menu – A different menu optimized for mobile devices.

To assign a location:

  1. Scroll to Menu Settings.
  2. Select the desired menu location (e.g., Primary Menu).
  3. Click Save Menu.

4. Creating Submenus (Dropdown Menus)

A dropdown menu allows you to organize links under a parent item.

  1. Drag a menu item slightly to the right under another item.
  2. The item will appear as a submenu (child item) under the parent item.
  3. Click Save Menu.
